THE OPPORTUNITY
Western Health is seeking an outstanding clinical leader to serve as Head of Unit, Gynaecology, within its Women’s & Children’s Division. This is a pivotal opportunity to join a fast-paced, high-demand service that delivers care across Sunshine, Bacchus Marsh/Melton, and Sunbury campuses. In 2024/25 alone, over 3,000 women accessed inpatient Gynaecology services, with theatre activity exceeding 55 operating lists per month. As the region continues to experience rapid population growth, Western Health is investing in its clinical leadership to shape sustainable models of care and deliver safe, person-centred services to its diverse community.
THE ROLE
Reporting to the Clinical Services Director and Divisional Director, the Head of Unit will provide strategic, clinical and operational leadership across all facets of Gynaecology services. The role oversees a team of specialists, registrars and junior doctors and is accountable for high-quality clinical governance, supervision and workforce planning, financial and activity target management, and delivery of safe, evidence-based care. The successful candidate will contribute to service innovation, treatment protocols, clinical audits, credentialing, quality improvement and divisional collaboration to ensure Best Care across every patient episode.
THE CANDIDATE
You are a senior medical specialist (FRANZCOG, FRACP, or equivalent) with demonstrated leadership capability and a strong commitment to delivering safe, high-quality, patient-centred care. While current AHPRA registration is not required at the time of application, you must be eligible and willing to obtain registration to practise in Australia.
You bring recognised expertise in general gynaecology and a passion for developing people, teams and systems. You have a track record of leading multidisciplinary teams, mentoring junior clinicians, and contributing to service planning, quality improvement and innovation. Your leadership style is collaborative and values-driven, and you are skilled at navigating clinical, operational and workforce challenges in a dynamic hospital setting. Importantly, you are motivated by the opportunity to shape the future of gynaecology services for a growing and diverse population.
