In conversation with Dr. Gerry O’Callaghan
- Looking back, what’s a defining moment that shaped your approach to leadership in healthcare?
Covid really helped me to understand the impact of uncertainty on clinical colleagues and the role of leaders in navigating this so there are clear options and pathways presented to colleagues caring for patients. The ability to inhabit this uncomfortable space, present ways in which decisions are made and can be revisited with new information or change of circumstances is a key leadership capability.
- In your view, what’s the most important capability senior clinical leaders need to develop for the future?
Data interpretation, distinguishing the signal from the noise in an increasingly cluttered data landscape and being able to make the case for your conclusion and how you got there. This is particularly true for clinical leaders in an operational or financial environment where complex or novel scientific evidence may be driving decisions which create competing priorities for organisations and leaders.
