The Medical and Injury Centre (MIC) is a joint venture between Nelson Bays General Practice Ltd and Nelson Bays Primary Health, providing urgent care services within a wider health system that includes general practice, the emergency department, aged care, ambulance services, ACC, secondary care and community providers. MIC’s future success depends on maintaining clarity of purpose, delivering a consistently high-quality patient experience and working effectively across these interfaces.
THE ROLE
The Medical and Injury Centre (MIC) is a trusted and respected provider of urgent and after-hours healthcare services in the Nelson region. Owned by local General Practitioners and operating in partnership with primary care providers, MIC plays a vital role in ensuring accessible, high-quality healthcare for the community when regular healthcare services are unavailable.
The Medical Director position offers an opportunity to shape the strategic and clinical future of the organisation while maintaining a strong focus on patient safety, service quality, and workforce capability. Working closely with the Board and senior leadership team, the successful candidate will contribute to the ongoing development of sustainable urgent care services, strengthen relationships across the wider health sector, and help ensure the organisation continues to meet the evolving healthcare needs of the region.
The person we are looking for
We are looking for someone who can hold both the immediate and the long term: a leader who understands urgent care delivery while helping MIC build the systems, workforce and relationships needed for the for the future.
The successful candidate will be a highly respected clinician with significant experience in urgent care, general practice, or a comparable healthcare environment. You will bring demonstrated expertise in clinical governance, patient safety, quality improvement, and healthcare leadership, together with the credibility to influence and inspire multidisciplinary clinical teams.
You will be an accomplished relationship builder with exceptional communication and stakeholder engagement skills, capable of working effectively across the healthcare sector while fostering strong partnerships that improve patient outcomes. A collaborative leadership style, sound judgement, and the ability to navigate complex clinical and organisational challenges will be essential.
The ideal candidate will also possess strong strategic and commercial awareness, with the ability to contribute to long-term service planning, organisational sustainability, and healthcare innovation. A commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi, culturally responsive practice, and equitable healthcare delivery will be fundamental, alongside alignment with MIC’s values of trust and respect, safety, accessibility, evidence-based practice, and cooperation.
