South Metropolitan Health Service (SMHS) comprises of Fiona Stanley, Fremantle, Rockingham General, Peel Health Campus (Aug 24) and Murray District Hospitals as well as several State-based community services. The largest facility, Fiona Stanley is a public hospital and teaching facility in Murdoch, Western Australia and is the major tertiary hospital in the south metropolitan area of Perth. With 783 beds, it offers a range of health services including the State Rehabilitation Service, State Adult Burns Service, a comprehensive cancer centre, purpose built mental health unit, maternity, paediatric and neonatal services. It also delivers specialised services such as heart and lung transplantations, robotic surgery, and hyperbaric medicine. The hospital is situated in the vibrant and growing suburb of Murdoch, situated approximately 12 km from the city centre. It is home to a large medical precinct which includes the Fiona Stanley Hospital, St John of God Murdoch and the Murdoch Medical Centre.

A rare opportunity is available for an outstanding candidate to take on the role of Area Director Nursing and Midwifery for SMHS. SMHS is responsible for the delivery of public hospital services to a population of 750,000 citizens in Western Australia. This critical role will provide strategic nursing and midwifery leadership and advice across SMHS as well as operational leadership for the Fiona Stanley Fremantle Hospitals Group (FSFHG).

The role has dual reporting lines. Reporting to the Executive Director FSFHG you will be responsible for innovative and strategic operational leadership for nursing and midwifery services at Fiona Stanley Hospital – WA’s largest tertiary hospital – and Fremantle Hospital. Reporting to the Chief Executive SMHS you will play a vital role as a member of the SMHS executive team developing and implementing organisational-wide strategies which will ensure the delivery of exceptional nursing and midwifery services and patient care.
The role will develop, foster and support a culture in nursing and midwifery services aligned to SMHS’ values that promotes and supports clinical excellence through education, professional development and research for the nursing and midwifery professions.
The successful candidate will possess a successful track record as a nursing and midwifery leader, preferably within a large and complex tertiary health care environment. You will possess excellent stakeholder, communication, negotiation, and interpersonal skills and be someone noted for their collaborative style. You will be an experienced leader with a strong focus on successful team development and possess an ability to steer teams through change.

The successful applicant will be eligible for registration as a Registered Nurse by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia. A tertiary qualification in management or leadership is highly desirable.
