Maternal Fetal Medicine Staff Specialist (H22_4420)

The Tasmanian Health Service is seeking a dynamic, enthusiastic and suitably accredited individual to appoint as a Maternal Fetal Medicine Staff Specialist.

The Royal Hobart Hospital is the tertiary referral hospital for Tasmania, and the principal teaching hospital for the University of Tasmania School of Medicine. The Hospital provides most specialist medical services for the southern region, and is the tertiary obstetric referral centre for the state of Tasmania.

The Obstetrics Department at the Royal Hobart Hospital provides clinical services to the highest possible standard to women and their families. The Royal Hobart Hospital delivers approximately 2,000 births per year, with around 20% of pregnancies receiving care through the MFM and high risk obstetric services. The newly completed K Block at the hospital delivers the highest standard family-centred care, that includes state of the art neonatal intensive services, with 28 NPICU and eight neonatal intensive care beds, and 12 special care nursery bays.

In this role, you will work as part of a multidisciplinary team providing subspecialist services in maternal fetal medicine and obstetrics to patients; promoting patient quality and safety, whilst providing leadership, training, supervision and education for doctors in training and other health workers in collaboration with other members of the obstetrics team.

The successful candidate will demonstrate experience in the management of high risk pregnancies and obstetric ultrasound and you will need to possess the following:

  1. Provide services to Obstetrics including diagnosis, treatment and care of patients at the Royal Hobart Hospital, both inpatient and outpatient.
  2. Care for high-risk pregnancies. Participation in the obstetric endocrine and high risk obstetric antenatal clinics. Both are multidisciplinary clinics providing care for pregnant women with medical comorbidities, multiple pregnancies, fetal abnormalities, preterm birth prevention and the management of fetal growth restriction.
  3. Participation in obstetric ultrasound including fetal growth and Doppler studies, and ultrasound guided procedures, such as amniocentesis and chorionic villous sampling.
  4. Undergraduate curriculum development and teaching.
  5. Participation in post-graduate teaching of resident medical officers and registrars.
  6. Undertake research in areas of Obstetrics
  7. Participate in out of hours’ on-call roster for inpatients and emergency patients referred by GPs, the Emergency Department or other departments, and overseeing the care of antenatal, intrapartum and postpartum women after hours when rostered.
  8. Participate in rostered daily service to oversee and support junior medical staff in Obstetrics.
