Welcome to HGI Executive Learning Sets

HGI Executive Learning Sets create a dynamic learning and leadership development environment with a strong focus on real work, real people and practical solutions to real life problems.

Learning Set participants raise difficult questions, discuss sensitive issues and share their learning in a supportive environment, secure in the knowledge that what they say remains confidential to the group.

HGI’s Learning Sets consist of six to eight executives who meet at regular intervals with an experienced facilitator. All our executive Learning Set facilitators offer wide-ranging skills and experience from a variety of professional backgrounds across the public, voluntary, business, arts and cultural sectors. Experienced executives in their own right, they come together under the HGI umbrella to offer some of the best action learning facilitation skills in Australia and New Zealand. Three or four meetings a year are held in the major cities on Australia’s Eastern seaboard and New Zealand.

Through HGI’s Executive Learning Sets, members

  • work on real problems and implement solutions – organisational improvement through learning by doing
  • become mentors to each other – learning with and through each other
  • are expected to ask questions, seek answers, gain support and expect challenge
  • are encouraged to be positive and open-minded about issues/problems being discussed and possible solutions
  • make a shared commitment to real action and change

Learning Sets may focus on a particular sector (such as health) or draw members from multiple sectors. Our Sets include executives from government departments and agencies, public sector service providers and non-government organisations. In every case, they are carefully matched to ensure that members have enough in common to speak a shared language but are sufficiently different (in role, professional background, geography, etc) both to challenge and learn from each other.
